Baked Apples Stuffed With Candy Bars

Baked apple stuffed with Snickers bar

Soft, Sweet, And Gooey

You can cook these baked apples along with any barbecue meat and time it so they’re ready as dessert at the end of your meal. I’ve made them with Snickers and Milky Way bars, but other candy bars will work just as well…Rolos come to mind.

The apples turn out soft, sweet and gooey, and since they’re wrapped in foil, they don’t have any smoke taste or aroma. They also make a fun barbecue project for the kids!

As Easy As Apple Pie…

To prepare this recipe, you’ll need:

  • Large red apples appropriate for baking (Fuji, Braeburn, McIntosh, or Rome Beauty)
  • Snickers or Milky Way candy bars
  • Dark brown sugar

Cut off the top of the apple, just enough to flatten it. Using a teaspoon or melon baller, scoop out the stem and seeds to within 1/2″ of the bottom, leaving the bottom intact, creating a hole for filling. Peel the top 2/3 of the apple.

Cut a piece of candy bar and stick it into the hole so it’s flush with the opening, then cut smaller slivers and fill the hole completely. Top off the apple with 2-3 heaping teaspoons of dark brown sugar packed on the flat top of the apple.

Wrap each apple separately in heavy duty aluminum foil. Make sure the foil closes at the top of the apple, since a lot of juice will collect in the bottom of the foil.

Place the apples upright in the WSM at 225-250°F and bake for 2 hours. Take them off the cooker and allow them to cool for 5-10 minutes. Transfer carefully to individual serving bowls. Serve with the juice that collected in the bottom of the foil, if desired.

Variations On A Theme

Try substituting other kinds of candy bars…anything with chocolate and caramel will work fine. If candy bars aren’t your thing, try filling the apples with:

  • Miniature marshmallows, brown sugar and cinnamon
  • Butter, brown sugar or honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and chopped walnuts
  • Butter and cinnamon
